Strengthening development cooperation in East Asian countries was the focus of the recent SDC East Asia Division Regional Seminar held in Ulaanbaatar from October 2-9.

More than 40 representatives from SDC's East Asia Division and Swiss missions, including Swiss embassies throughout the region, SDC Humanitarian Aid and Global Cooperation and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs gathered in UB for the seminar, which enabled participants to share experiences, identify areas of commonality and coordinate future development strategies.

To better understand the scope of SDC's work in Mongolia, delegates were taken on three-day field trips to SDC project operations throughout the country, travelling more than 1500km to visit the Sustainable Artisanal Mining and Mongolian Potato projects in Tuv aimag, the One-Stop-Shop Project in Darkhan, and the Green Gold and Livestock projects in Arkhangai aimag.

In closing the seminar, Ms Vokral said the field trips had been one of the highlights of the visit as they had allowed participants to have a closer look at the realities in the field of SDC's work in Mongolia.

During the seminar, SDC Deputy Director-General Edita Vokral conducted a lecture entitled "Switzerland in the Face of the Global Economic Crisis" at the Ministry of External Relations and Trade, and attended an SDC and Zorig Foundation scholarship programme ceremony where she presented scholarship certificates to more than 40 university students from low-income families and rural areas.

Thanks to the efforts of the SDC Mongolia team and project officers, the event received an excellent evaluation. The East Asia Division Regional Seminar is held in different countries on a rotational basis every two years.
