The gold mining sector of the mining industry in Mongolia has intensified with the adoption and implementation of the “Gold program” in 1991. Since this time Mongolian people have become strongly involved in artisanal mining activities. Due to the transition from the central planned economy under communism to the market economy, many citizens have plunged into unemployment and poverty. Contributing further to job loss and poverty was the heavy loss of livestock (up to 11 million head of livestock) from the frequently occurring natural disasters of drought and dzud since the 1990s depriving many herders of their only livelihood source. Today Mongolian societal groups have different views and opinions about this new socio-economic phenomenon, which provides both opportunities and advantages but also poses several significant negative social and environmental effects.
