Aimag - Mongolia is divided administratively into 21 aimags (provinces) and the Capital city Ulaanbaatar
Soum - Aimags are divided into soums
Bagh - soums are divided into baghs, the least administrative unit
Ger - A Mongolian round traditional dwelling, made of felt and wood.
Dzud - A Mongolian climatic phenomenon - drought in summer followed by heavy snow in winter cause serious losses of livestock

A national consultative meeting on “Artisanal and Small Scale Mining and Rural Development” was organized under an auspecies of Prime Minister of Mongolia on 13 October, 2009. It was hosted by the department of Mining and Heavy Industry Policy Department of Ministry of Mineral Resources & Energy and Sustainable Artisanal Mining project of Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Its main goal was to make contributions in rural development through identification and presentation of existing artisanal mining related problems and their potential solutions to policy making and regulatory and implementary agencies.

Under this goal, the consultative meeting participants were presented with the initiatives to support artisanal mining operations with favourable legal and business environment as they were informed about the current situation of artisanal and small scale mining in the country, concerns, and some successes of international and national artisanal miners, and alternative solutions that increase social responsiblity of artisanal miners in the country.

The national consultative meeting was attended by over 120 representatives including from law making and enforcement organizations (Parliament members, Government regulatory and implementary organizations), artisanal miners, (gold, coal, fluorspar, and tungsten), ASM supporting organizations, local governments, mining NGOs, bank and financial institutions, envirnmental civil movements, researchers, SAM project and international organizations (World Bank, SDC, UNDP, & ILO) and mass media.

The consultative meeting was organized in order to speed up development of legal and regulatory framework and increase public understanding on potential regulation of ASM operations in the country through consulting and introducing international and national successes. From the consultative meeting, Recommendations and Call for Actions for development of responsible artisanal mining addressing at all stakeholders including the Government were developed.
