Aimag - Mongolia is divided administratively into 21 aimags (provinces) and the Capital city Ulaanbaatar
Soum - Aimags are divided into soums
Bagh - soums are divided into baghs, the least administrative unit
Ger - A Mongolian round traditional dwelling, made of felt and wood.
Dzud - A Mongolian climatic phenomenon - drought in summer followed by heavy snow in winter cause serious losses of livestock

The objective of reclamation/rehabilitation is to restore the site to an acceptable satisfactory condition by:

1)      Eliminating unacceptable health hazard and ensuring public safety.

2)      Restoring site to a condition that is visually acceptable to the community

3)      Reclaiming the areas impacted for possible future use ( agriculture, herding)

4)      Preparing the site to be amenable to support vegetation if it originally had vegetation.

5)      Removing any contaminated soil if any

6)      Ensuring physical stabilization of the soil  i.e. contouring slopes, replacing overburden and top soil and re-vegetating where possible

7)      Ensuring that the final drainage of the site is properly restored.

Census of ASMs has been started. PDF Print E-mail

Starting from 01 April a census of informal miners in the country has been officially started. It is planned to conduct the census in western, central and govi regions that include 12 aimags (with potential increasing number of aimags to be covered) in the country. The Ministries of Social Welfare and Justice jointly issued a decree on establishment of a working group with 12 nominated members to deal with supervision over official census process starting from April 07. The working group has started its task in the govi region. The official census is conducted under the implementation of the Sub-program on ASM Development until 2015 and temporary regulation on ASM, which was recently approved. Under this official census it is expected to register totallu 45,000 ASMs and to issue them ID card through cooperation with the State Civil Registration and Information Center. As a result of this official census the informal miners will be provided with adequate access to health care and other social/welfare services.

SAM Project announced an essay writing contest "ASM in our life" among high school and university and college students via the local project office in Bayankhongor March 3-20. Totally 12 participants sent their essays. Amongst, an essay by B. Khurelmunkh, 3d year student of School of Economics, NUM was selected and awarded as the best essay. The best essay was published on a local newspaper of Bayankhongor aimag "Youths".
